From its beginnings in the early 1700s to the present day, Boston would be nothing without its taverns, bars, speakeasies, and pubs. From the Green Dragon Tavern (1764) and Bell-in-Hand (1795) to the many new pubs and clubs around Faneuil Hall and along Canal and Hanover Streets, drinking and carousing (in an often noisy and lively way!) have become both an escape from Boston’s often outlandish weather and an excuse for celebratory libation – in and of itself.
